A dynamic force in shaping Miami’s cultural and urban landscape, Craig Robins has been named chair of the Board of Governors of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. A member of the board for several years, Robins now steps into a leadership role that reflects his deep commitment to community, innovation and impact.

“It is an honor to serve Sylvester in this new capacity,” said Robins. “Bringing together groundbreaking research, compassionate care and a commitment to patients and families is truly transformative. I look forward to helping advance Sylvester’s mission and expand its reach.”

Robins succeeds Jayne S. Malfitano, who recently completed her term as chair and continues her dedicated service to Sylvester.

As chair, Robins will help guide the Board of Governors in supporting Sylvester’s role as South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, advancing leading-edge research, clinical care, education and community engagement.

“Our responsibility as a board is to help ensure that Sylvester continues to grow as a destination for innovation and care,” Robins said. “That means supporting the people, programs and partnerships that make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients across our community.”

A Visionary Leader and Community Builder

As CEO and president of Dacra, the real estate development company he founded in 1987, Robins has built a career defined by visionary thinking and the creation of vibrant, connected communities. His work has transformed neighborhoods across Miami, from the revitalization of South Beach to the development of the Miami Design District, by integrating art, design and architecture into dynamic urban environments.

Robins’ approach has always centered on the idea that thoughtful design and creative programming can foster connection, elevate experience and bring people together. Through public art, cultural events and innovative development, he has helped shape spaces that are not only economically successful, but also deeply rooted in community.

That same philosophy aligns closely with Sylvester’s mission to bring world-class care, research and resources closer to the people it serves.

“Building community is at the heart of everything Craig does,” said Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., director of Sylvester, the Oscar de la Renta Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and executive dean for research at the Miller School. “He understands how to create environments that inspire engagement, excellence, collaboration and connection. Those qualities are incredibly valuable as we continue to expand Sylvester’s impact across South Florida and beyond.”

An Engaged and Forward-Looking Leader

In his new role, Robins is focused on strengthening Sylvester’s connection to the broader community while supporting its continued growth and innovation.

“I’ve always believed that great institutions thrive when they are deeply connected to the communities they serve,” Robins said. “Sylvester has an extraordinary opportunity to continue expanding access, advancing discovery and creating new pathways for impact.”

Through his engagement with Sylvester’s leadership, clinicians and researchers, Robins is committed to fostering collaboration and supporting initiatives that enhance patient care and accelerate scientific progress.

“Every interaction reinforces the remarkable talent and dedication across this organization,” he said. “It’s inspiring to see firsthand the passion driving this work and the difference it makes for patients and their loved ones.”

Reflecting on Robins’ appointment, Malfitano expressed confidence in his leadership and vision.

“Craig brings a unique perspective shaped by his ability to build communities and think creatively about growth and impact,” she said. “He is deeply committed to Sylvester’s mission and has the insight and leadership to guide the board forward. I have no doubt he will be an exceptional chair, and I look forward to seeing all that will be accomplished under his leadership.”

A Miami Beach native, Robins earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. He and his wife, Jackie Soffer, a member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, share a strong connection to the institution and its mission.
