The annual award is given by the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to an exemplary clinician selected by the division chiefs and department chairman. Model moral behavior, outstanding clinical acumen, service to patients and productivity are among the rigorous selection criteria.

“Improving individual sleep health is a privilege, and enhancing public sleep health is professionally rewarding,” said Abreu. “I am honored and humbled to receive the Distinguished Clinician Award as recognition of service, conduct and behavior that I strive to emulate and that provides me with substantive pleasure.”

Enhancing public sleep health literacy and participating in organized sleep medicine are among Abreu’s passions. He is director of the UHealth Sleep Program and the sleep medicine fellowship training program, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Abreu is active in the community, often lecturing and attending health fairs and other community programs in an effort to educate the public on matters of sleep. He also is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, currently serving as the chair of the Accreditation Committee. He is certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
