Dr. Miguel Cobas Elected President of Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists

Miguel Cobas, M.D., professor of anesthesiology at the University Of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been elected president of the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA), an organization dedicated to the education of anesthesiologists in the care of critically ill patients of all types. It fosters the knowledge and practice of critical care medicine by anesthesiologists through education, research, advocacy, and community service.

Cobas brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has been a member of SOCCA since 2005, serving on multiple committees and task forces. He is currently the chief of anesthesiology and critical care services at Jackson South Medical Center, a Level II trauma center in south Miami-Dade. He is also program director for the Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program based in nationally recognized teaching hospitals.

Cobas received his M.D. degree in 1992 from Universidad Central de Venezuela. He completed his anesthesiology residency in 1999 at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital and completed his critical care medicine fellowship in 2000 at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“It is a privilege and a humbling responsibility to participate in healing the lives of the world’s most vulnerable population,” said Cobas, “and the personal rewards associated with critical care clearly outweigh a lifetime of lack of sleep.”
