New M.S. in Skin Biology and Dermatological Sciences Program is a First in the U.S.

The Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine is launching the first Master of Science in Skin Biology and Dermatological Sciences program in the United States. The program is designed to prepare students for careers and leadership positions in skin science and industry.

The curriculum covers basic science and laboratory techniques, as well as management skills, grant and regulatory issues, enterprise issues, and clinical problems. The thesis track requires completion of a laboratory research project and thesis, and is tailored to students interested in research career or contemplating a Ph.D. degree. The non-thesis track is designed for students who wish to improve their knowledge in skin biology and related sciences through a rigorous series of courses.

“The past quarter-century has produced revolutionary developments in biomedical science,” said Jie Li, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of dermatology and cutaneous surgery, and director of the degree program. “From human genome to stem cells, targeted therapies, and personalized medicine, biomedical science has dramatically changed traditional medicine, and as a result has changed our thinking. But despite clear evidence of need, there has been no graduate research degree program focusing on skin biology and dermatological sciences.

“Our new program imparts a unique skill set, and there is a growing need for knowledge about the skin. Health care providers, policy makers, research scientists, academic practices in the U.S. and in the world, as well as makers of skin care products of devices, drugs, cosmetics and cosmeceuticals, need such trained personnel. Our courses offer essential background of scientific knowledge, management and administrative skills that will be helpful for individuals desiring a skin sciences-oriented career.”
