When the popular digital platform UroToday.com needed a founding editor to head its functional urology center of excellence, they asked Alan J. Wein, M.D., Ph.D. (hon.), professor of clinical urology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and director of business development and mentoring for the Desai Sethi Urology Institute (DSUI). Dr. Wein’s more than 60 years in urological academic medicine have made him a celebrity of sorts in the specialty, one perfectly suited to host UroToday’s Functional Urology podcasts and shape the editorial direction and ongoing development of educational content within the platform.

Founded in 2003 by Gina B. Carithers, UroToday is a global urology and uro-oncology resource, serving 3 million urologists, clinical oncologists and patients in more than 200 countries. The Prostate Cancer Foundation, of which Carithers is president and CEO, acquired UroToday and its parent company, Digital Science Press, in 2021.

“UroToday gets 10 million page views every year and is a leading online platform for all urologic and urologic oncologic education,” Dr. Wein said. “My job is to sort through the functional urology topics in journals and presented at meetings and highlight some for either summary viewpoints or as podcasts on UroToday.”

What is Functional Urology?

Functional urology includes anything that interferes with the lower-urinary tract filling with, storing and emptying urine and the treatments to address dysfunctions. While it generally does not include cancer, stone disease or pediatric urology, functional medicine does include pelvic pain.

Each of Dr. Wein’s 10- to 15-minute podcasts puts a spotlight on what’s new and interesting in the subspecialty of functional urology and on the leading scientists and clinicians with expertise in those topics.

Recent podcasts include:

“• A Discussion on the Field of Men’s Health and Gender-Specific Medicine” featuring Bruce Kava, M.D., DSUI professor of clinical urology and director of men’s health

An Opportunity to Shine for DSUI, Miller School

Dr. Wein’s editorial role at UroToday is a win for DSUI and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

“There is a preliminary announcement and banner before every podcast that shows me as the interviewer and credits Desai Sethi Urology Institute and the University of Miami,” Dr. Wein said. “I also plan to interview more Miller School faculty, which pays tribute to the quality of work we’re doing here at DSUI.”

Dr. Wein added, “UroToday is a valuable resource for anyone interested in urology and accessing it doesn’t cost anything. It is a whole mini-urology universe on one website.”

Each UroToday Center of Excellence is a portal to expert-led curated and evergreen content on evolving disease and treatment information. Portals include functional urology and several urologic oncology subspecialties. Each features editor blogs, emerging data from recent conferences, exclusive video conversations and access to state-of-the-art foundational disease and treatment information.

Dr. Wein admitted that while some might call it work, he doesn’t. He enjoys reading about what’s going on in the specialty and interviewing the experts, most of whom have become friends during his career.
