Mark L Gonzalgo, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., has been named chair of the Department of Urology within the Desai Sethi Urology Institute (DSUI) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UHealth — University of Miami Health System.

As chair, Dr. Gonzalgo will lead, oversee and manage clinical, research and educational programs in urology, integrating seamlessly with the mission and trajectory of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, led by founding director Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., who is also chief executive officer of UHealth and executive vice president of health affairs for the University of Miami.

Dr. Gonzalgo has served as DSUI vice chair, working to promote urological care and research on a national stage. Dr. Parekh said, “Dr. Gonzalgo has demonstrated his leadership and vision for urologic care, as a clinician, researcher and leader. This made him a natural fit to take on the role of chair of the urology department.”

Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School, described Dr. Gonzalgo as an innovator and natural leader.

“His commitment to leadership is unquestionable,” Dean Ford said. “He has held multiple leadership roles while maintaining his reputation as a top clinician and researcher. We couldn’t ask for a more qualified person to lead the department into the future.”

Dr. Gonzalgo will oversee the department’s continued growth and recruit and retain high-performing faculty and staff. One of the things that excites him about his new role is the opportunity to work with the department’s outstanding and dedicated team.

“This is where world-class clinical care is seamlessly connected to groundbreaking research and where faculty, trainees and staff are empowered to thrive,” Dr. Gonzalgo said. “I look forward to leading our mission to create an environment where multidisciplinary care, scientific discovery and surgical excellence intersect to improve patient outcomes and train the next generation of leaders in urology.”

Dr. Gonzalgo will continue his impactful research in robotic surgical treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancers. He is a recognized expert in DNA methylation and is particularly interested in developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for cancer detection and treatment. He has carried out pioneering research on the molecular biology and early detection of prostate, bladder and kidney cancer and has published extensively on the scientific and clinical aspects of these diseases.

In addition to his role as chair, Dr. Gonzalgo is professor of urology at the Miller School and executive director of perioperative surgical services at UHealth. He serves as director of the urologic oncology fellowship program.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon Dr. Parekh’s transformative work. Under his leadership, our department has become a model for excellence in academic urology. It is a privilege to continue this legacy and to guide the department into its next phase of growth,” Dr. Gonzalgo said.

In his aim to further strengthen clinical programs, enhance multidisciplinary partnerships and create a culture of excellence that supports education, research and the highest standard of patient care, Dr. Gonzalgo said that one of his priorities is to cultivate a culture rooted in trust, professional development and shared purpose.

“I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment in which faculty, trainees and staff are empowered to excel. The momentum we have built at DSUI reflects the extraordinary talent of our team. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues to further elevate our impact locally, nationally and globally,” he said.
