Second Look: Inside a Month of Discovery for Future #MedCanes
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine launched the #MedCanes Month of Discovery to offer accepted pre-meds a glimpse into life as a Miller School medical student.
For pre-med students, securing that long-awaited acceptance into medical school is a crowning achievement. However, some still have a significant choice to make: which institution will best prepare them for their future medical career?
To help prospective students make informed decisions, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine admissions and enrollment management team launched the #MedCanes Month of Discovery to offer accepted pre-meds a glimpse into life as a Miller School medical student.
An Introduction to the Miller School of Medicine
#MedCanes Month of Discovery, a month-long series events, attracted more than 175 pre-med students from across the country to delve deeper into what the Miller School offers its students. Combining in-person and virtual experiences, the month gave the pre-meds a chance to engage with faculty, interact with current students and gain insights into the school’s ethos and educational approach.
The activities represent an innovative expansion of traditional “second look” day or weekend that medical schools host to engage students accepted to their programs.
“Our Month of Discovery is focused on creating meaningful connections and giving students a true sense of what it means to be part of our community,” said Yvette Perry, Ph.D., associate dean of admissions and assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education. “We wanted them to leave feeling confident and excited about the prospect of joining our medical school family.”
Meeting Faculty, Exploring Educational Paths
The students learned about NextGenMD, the school’s innovative curriculum, shadowed current #MedCanes on community outreach missions, gained insight into the various educational paths the school offers, and spoke with leadership, faculty members and other essential team members who will be helping them throughout their medical school journey. This access provided a valuable perspective on the Miller School’s commitment to student success.
“We were thrilled to launch this year’s #MedCanes Month of Discovery as part of our new engagement strategies to guide and connect with future #MedCanes year-round, igniting a passion for learning and a sense of belonging within our vibrant community,” said Carol McGhie, Ed.D., senior director of student records, registration and enrollment.
The month culminated with a celebratory reception held at the University of Miami Coral Gables campus, Attendees networked with other pre-meds, current #MedCanes, faculty and leadership in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.
Against the backdrop of the iconic Miami skyline, students had the chance to envision themselves as part of the Miller School community and forge connections that would last a lifetime.
“This month of activities is not just about showcasing what our medical school has to offer. It’s about welcoming students into our community,” said Dr. Perry. “I can’t wait to see many of these students at our Class of 2028 orientation soon!”
