American College Personnel Association Honors Dr. Nanette Vega
Reflecting her deep commitment to student success, Nanette Vega, Ed.D., has been named to the American College Personnel Association’s Class of 2021 Diamond Honorees – the ACPA’s highest honor.
“It is a honor to be recognized by the ACPA, which does so much to promote student development and success,” said Dr. Vega, assistant professor of medical education and assistant dean for diversity, inclusion and community engagement at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “It is even a greater honor to be placed in such distinguished ranks as those past honorees, most of whom have been colleagues at one time or another, and have made important contributions to my life professionally and personally.”
Dr. Vega was one of 16 higher education professionals selected nationally as an ACPA Diamond Honoree, and will be recognized during the Virtual ACPA Convention on March 1-17, 2021.
“Dr. Vega is a dynamic leader who focuses on the needs of individual students, while helping to instill a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout our medical school,” said Roderick K. King, M.D., M.P.H., senior associate dean for diversity, inclusion, and community engagement, director of the M.D./M.P.H. program, and associate professor in public health sciences and pediatrics. “It is fitting for her to be a Diamond Honoree because she is truly a gem in our program.”
Angie Montelongo, M.Ed., director of orientation and new student programs at University of Houston-Clear Lake, championed Dr. Vega’s nomination. “Nanette has had a tremendous impact on many individuals, both inside and outside of the field of higher education,” she said. “Nanette has also been a great friend, and I am so happy to be by her side as she is recognized for her contributions to higher education and student affairs.”
Dr. Vega is a diversity, equity, and inclusion professional with more than 20 years of experience in health care and higher education strategic planning, assessment, and program development. In addition to her role at the Miller School, she serves as a consultant and holds leadership roles in various professional organizations. She served as the national chair for the ACPA Latinx/a/o Network.
She has received numerous honors for her work, including the Insight into Diversity-Diversity Visionary Award, the University of Miami Iron Arrow and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, and the ACPA Coalition for Multicultural Affairs Outstanding Contribution to Multicultural Education Award.
Before the March convention, funds will be raised in Dr. Vega’s honor. The goal is to raise $2,500 to support the ACPA Foundation, whose initiatives include conference scholarships and research grants in higher education.
