Carnegie Foundation Names Dr. Andrew Schally a ‘Great Immigrant’

Andrew V. Schally, Ph.D., M.D.h.c., D.Sc.h.c., the 1977 Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, distinguished professor of pathology at the Miller School of Medicine, and a distinguished medical research scientist in the Department of Veterans Affairs, was named a “Great Immigrant” by Carnegie Corporation of New York, the philanthropic foundation established by Scottish immigrant Andrew Carnegie.

Schally was one of 38 distinguished individuals honored by the foundation in its annual tribute to the role that immigrants play in helping to advance the society, culture and economy of the United States. The tribute, produced in the form of a full-page public service announcement in The New York Times on July 4, recognized naturalized citizens from 30 countries, including Poland, where Schally was born.

“This campaign reminds us of the debt the United States owes to generations of immigrants who become citizens and contribute to the progress of this country,” said Vartan Gregorian, the foundation’s president. “Today, we celebrate and thank them.”
