Dr. Nouri, what has kept you at the U for all these years?
UM as a whole is a fantastic institution. It’s constantly improving and expanding, and Miami is a wonderful and diverse city. The Miller School is topnotch and the Department of Dermatology has one of the largest and most respected residency programs in the country. There hasn’t been a dull moment in the past 25 years.
What has been your most memorable experience?
I would say it’s not one memory, but years of truly great ones. Having the opportunity to work with all of the faculty and senior leadership through my appointment as the chair of the University of Miami Medical Group has been an honor.
I have also been able to work with brilliant students and faculty from across the globe through my role as director of the International Observership program. Finally, my day-to-day interactions with my patients and the support of my amazing team has made my job not only easy but enjoyable.
Tell us about your first day at the University of Miami
I came to Miami for the first time the night before my residency interview and went to dinner with our current chair, Dr. Kirsner, who at that time was the chief resident. We went to Coconut Grove and I was able to experience the vibrancy of this wonderful city as well as the kindness of my future colleagues. The next day, I had my interviews, and I was fortunate to match into the program.
What advice would you give to new residents and physicians starting their journey at the Miller School?
Take advantage of everything the Department of Dermatology, or whatever specialty you are in, has to offer. At this institution, we have great faculty and great patients. Aside from the fantastic medical school, UM has many world-class programs. I had the opportunity to receive a health M.B.A. from the Miami Herbert Business School. And don’t forget to allow yourself some downtime and take advantage of the vibrant city, as well.
What does the long service recognition mean to you?
It’s been my first and only job because the University of Miami, UHealth and the Miller School of Medicine have so much to offer. It’s an exciting place to work and to live. I’m very committed to this institution and I’ve been fortunate to accomplish so much here.
I’ve published 14 textbooks, about 400 peer-reviewed papers and another 200 book chapters. I was awarded the Richard Helfman Professor of Dermatologic Surgery in 2011 and the Louis C. Skinner, Jr., M.D. Endowed Chair in Dermatology in 2012. I’ve given talks and lectures globally and had the privilege to mentor the next generation of physicians. It’s been an amazingly rewarding career at the University and I’m looking forward to many more years to come at the institution.
