Dr. Mark Gonzalgo Elected Education Chair of the American Urological Association
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Mark Gonzalgo, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., will lead the future education initiatives of the American Urological Association (AUA) as the organization’s education chair.
Dr. Gonzalgo, a Miller School professor of urology and vice chair of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, will work to ensure the quality and medical accuracy of educational content provided by the AUA. He will oversee nine different committees and work groups as he coordinates activities with the secretary and associate secretaries for the AUA’s International Education Plan.
In addition, Dr. Gonzalgo will oversee the development of the AUA’s educational activities, including instructional courses and skills training at the AUA annual meeting, educational products and more.
“I am truly honored and excited to work with the AUA Office of Education to advance its mission of enhancing the clinical, business and leadership knowledge of the urologic community,” Dr. Gonzalgo said. “We have a tremendous opportunity to shape the future of urological education with the highest standards of learning across all areas of urology.”
Dr. Gonzalgo will first serve as chair-elect on June 1 to learn the details of the position and take over the following June for his four-year term.
Commitment to Urological Education and Oncology
Working with the AUA isn’t new for Dr. Gonzalgo. He and the organization have collaborated for nearly 20 years. His roles with the AUA include reviewer and presenter. Since 2021, he has been on the AUA Education Council as a representative for urologic oncology.
Within this specialty, Dr. Gonzalgo has conducted dedicated research on robotic surgery and translational research in bladder cancer, and led clinical trials. His work, including robotic techniques for prostate cancer, has been shown at various AUA conferences and he has published more than 150 papers in notable urology journals.
“We are looking forward to working with Dr. Gonzalgo in his new role as chair of our Office of Education,” said Randall Meacham, M.D., AUA president. “Given his decades-long history of working with AUA, he is exceptionally suited for this position, and the Board is confident that he will introduce innovative ideas to elevate the educational programs AUA offers.”
Well-Rounded Approach to Education
It’s not just Dr. Gonzalgo’s urological expertise that made him ideal for the role. His passion for education is expressed in the lab and his continued pursuit of learning. As a physician-scientist with an M.B.A. in Health Management and Policy from the University of Miami’s Herbert Business School, Dr. Gonzalgo brings a well-rounded educational approach and mindset to the AUA role.
