Dr. Mark Gonzalgo Joins Prestigious Association of Genitourinary Surgeons
He becomes the third Desai Sethi Urology Institute physician-scientist active AAGUS member.
Mark Gonzalgo, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., professor and vice chair of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute (DSUI) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was elected to the prestigious American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS).
Since forming in 1886, AAGUS has fostered a society devoted to studying genitourinary and venereal diseases. Each year, current AAGUS members nominate accomplished urologic surgeons for its 75-member association.
Third AAGUS Member from DSUI
Dr. Gonzalgo is the third DSUI faculty member to be selected. He joins current AAGUS members Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., founding director of DSUI, and Alan J. Wein, M.D., professor and director of business development and mentoring at DSUI.
“Joining this association is a tremendous honor,” Dr. Gonzalgo said. “I look forward to engaging in future research discussions with colleagues in AAGUS. I am also proud to continue DSUI’s representation by joining the company of luminary figures in the field with Drs. Parekh and Wein.”
Honorable Selection for Urological Oncology
The AAGUS maintains a rigorous selection process. Active members submit proposals to the organization’s secretary-treasurer with an initial letter, two seconding letters and curriculum vitae. These nominees are meticulously reviewed by a membership committee and require two-thirds of the voting members to approve.
“Our specific process is created to get solely the best members in the specialty,” Dr. Parekh said. “We are fortunate at DSUI to have three members in the AAGUS, showing how distinct our institution is in gathering only the finest in the field. Members such as Dr. Gonzalgo will further elevate this association to greater steps in excellence.”
Dr. Gonzalgo has a vast portfolio of accomplishments as a urologic oncologist, with expertise in open and robotic surgical approaches for the treatment of prostate, bladder and kidney cancers. He is a recognized expert in DNA methylation and has carried out pioneering research on the molecular biology and early detection of cancer.
In addition, he has received recognition as a Top Doctor by US News & World Report and is an emeritus member of the scientific advisory board of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network. He was appointed chair-elect of the American Urological Association Office of Education in February.
