Dr. Shivank Bhatia Named Chair of Interventional Radiology
Shivank Bhatia, M.D., a member of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and associate professor of interventional radiology, has been named chair of the Department of Interventional Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Bhatia has been responsible for many multidisciplinary initiatives that have moved a number of advanced clinical treatments forward. He is active in cutting-edge research, and has contributed to educational excellence at the Miller School through his involvement in teaching and mentoring of students and trainees. He has been an innovator, and been recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions in the field.
“Dr. Bhatia possesses the mix of academic excellence, clinical skills and forward thinking that made him our choice for the next chair of our youngest department,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School. “He is to be congratulated for this well-deserved new position.”
Dr. Bhatia earned his M.D. at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, India, followed by a rotating internship and a residency in radiology there, and then a fellowship in interventional radiology at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital, after which he joined the Miller School faculty in 2006 as instructor of clinical radiology in the Department of Radiology. He was promoted to assistant professor of clinical radiology in 2007, then to associate professor of interventional radiology in 2016, when the Department of Interventional Radiology was formed. He also has held a secondary appointment in the Department of Urology since 2017.
“As chair, my goal is to promote and mentor faculty to introduce multidisciplinary destination programs across various service lines and foster a culture of working collaboratively on multiple initiatives with other departments across the institution,” Dr. Bhatia said. “I plan to create a team of faculty members who share a unified vision to make the department a clinical, research and education destination for IR. This will create an exemplary environment to train the next generation of innovators and leaders.”
Dr. Bhatia has served as medical director for interventional radiology at the Miami VA Hospital and University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, and as an attending radiologist at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is board certified in both radiology and interventional radiology.
“We would like to give sincere thanks to Dr. Robert M. Quencer, professor and chair of the Department of Radiology, who has also been serving as interim chair of the Department of Interventional Radiology, for his able leadership of two departments during our search,” said Edward Abraham, M.D., executive vice president for health affairs and CEO of UHealth, “and to the members of the Selection Committee for their dedication to finding the right leader to take the Department of Interventional Radiology to the next level.”
