Dr. William F. Pirl Recognized with APOS Education and Training Award

The American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS) selected William F. Pirl, M.D., M.P.H., associate director for Cancer Support Services at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, for the Outstanding Education and Training Award at its national conference on February 16. After a competitive selection process, APOS grants this annual award to an individual who makes substantial contributions to educating or training others in the field.

“This award is meaningful to me because it comes from a national organization that represents physicians, psychologists, nurses, and social workers who specialize in the psychosocial care of individuals with cancer,” said Pirl, a trained psychiatrist and neurologist. “Receiving this award makes me realize that I am making an impact on the next generation in psychosocial oncology.”

Pirl created and coordinates the Massachusetts General Hospital Workshop on Research Methods in Supportive Oncology every year. This intensive six-day workshop attracts junior investigators from across the United States, giving them an opportunity to write a new research proposal, from start to finish, with mentorship from faculty.
