Eight Bascom Palmer Doctors Named to Power List 2022
Eight highly esteemed ophthalmologists of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute were selected for The Ophthalmologist Power List 2022, which honors the world’s 100 most influential people in the field of ophthalmology.
Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., Zelia M. Correa, M.D., Ph. D., Kendall E. Donaldson, M.D., M.S., Harry W. Flynn Jr., M.D., Anat Galor, M.D., Steven J. Gedde, M.D., Ranya G. Habash, M.D., and Philip J. Rosenfeld, M.D., Ph.D., were named to the Power List as published in The Ophthalmologist magazine.

Dr. Eduardo Alfonso is an internationally respected physician, surgeon, researcher, and leader in health care administration who is recognized for his clinical expertise and research on ocular infectious diseases, corneal surgery, corneal transplantation, and ocular microbiology. Founder of the Cornea and External Disease Academic Society, he has served on scientific boards for industry, the National Eye Institute, Prevent Blindness America, Alcon Research Institute, and Research to Prevent Blindness. Among many professional honors, he was appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the National Institute of Health’s National Advisory Eye Council. Each year under Alfonso’s leadership, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been ranked the best eye hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Alfonso was also named to the Power List in 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Dr. Zelia Correa is a world-renown ocular cancer specialist with extensive surgical experience. Correa joined Bascom Palmer as a professor of ophthalmology and co-director of ocular oncology in 2020. She is recognized not only in the field of ocular oncology but also in vitreoretinal surgery and ophthalmic pathology. Her current research focuses on the use of artificial intelligence to distinguish benign from malignant ocular tumors based on imaging characteristics.
Dr. Kendall Donaldson is a cornea specialist whose primary research interests are in the areas of advancement in cataract surgery, and in particular, laser-assisted cataract surgery, as well as severe ocular surface disease. Each year, she presents more than 100 lectures at local, national, and international levels and has authored a variety of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She was named to the Power List 2021 which recognized the world’s 100 most influential women in ophthalmology.
Dr. Harry Flynn Jr., the J. Donald M. Gass Chair in Ophthalmology, has a long and distinguished career in academic medicine through a combination of teaching, research, and patient care. A specialist in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous, he has been involved in the training of more than 600 residents, fellows, and visiting physicians over the past 40 years. He has conducted numerous clinical trials including the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study, the Branch and Central Vein Occlusion Studies, and the Silicone Oil Study. He had published more than 547 articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited seven books. He was also named to the Power List in 2018.
Dr. Anat Galor is an expert on ocular surface pain and dry eye, and its relationship with neuropathic ocular pain. She is also an expert in the epidemiology and treatment of persistent pain after LASIK. Galor has evaluated the efficacy of several therapies in the treatment of neuropathic ocular pain. She has also focused on how ocular surface symptoms affect the quality of life. Galor was also named to the Power List 2021 which recognized the world’s 100 most influential women in ophthalmology.
Dr. Steven Gedde, Bascom Palmer’s vice chair of education and holder of the John G. Clarkson Chair in Ophthalmology is an outstanding physician, researcher, and educator. During his 21-year leadership as Bascom Palmer’s residency program director, the Institute’s training program was continually recognized as one of the best in the nation, attracting a growing pool of highly qualified candidates annually. His impact on medical education was recognized with his selection as the Excellency in Health Care Education of the Year in 2009. He is an expert in the field of glaucoma and his research has focused on improving patient care through clinical trials having served as study chair on multicenter randomized clinical trials comparing tube shut surgery and trabeculectomy.
Dr. Ranya Habash is deeply involved in the information technology aspect of medicine and is working to unite the world and help patients through technology. During her former tenure at Bascom Palmer, she served as medical director of technology innovation and was instrumental in developing the Institute’s successful telemedicine program at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing patients immediate access to Bascom Palmer’s ophthalmologists. She is currently the CEO of LifeLong Vision Special Purpose Acquisition Corporation. Habash was named to the Power List in 2017 featuring ophthalmology’s “Top 50 Rising Stars” and also in 2021 as one of the world’s 100 most influential women in the field.
