The academy was formed as a partnership of the Dade County Medical Association, Broward County Medical Association, and Palm Beach County Medical Society. It is supported by the Florida Medical Association, with six physicians selected to represent each county. The goal is to challenge participants to grow and maximize their leadership skills and to enable them to assume new roles as leaders in their hospitals, communities, and medical associations.

The participants from the Miller School were Geetika A. Klevos, M.D., assistant professor of clinical radiology; Keyvan Nouri, M.D., Louis C. Skinner, Jr., M.D. Endowed Chair in Dermatology and Richard Helfman Professor of Dermatologic Surgery; Oleksandr Kryvenko, M.D., assistant professor of pathology and urology; and Andrew L. Sherman, M.D., professor and vice chair of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

“The curriculum was great and the participants were extraordinary physicians,” said Kryvenko, who is a board member of the Florida Society of Pathologists and serves as the society’s delegate to the Florida Medical Association. “There was a lot to learn from the tutors and from the participants.”

Joshua D. Lenchus, D.O., R.Ph., associate professor of clinical medicine, anesthesiology and radiology at the Miller School, associate director of the UM/Jackson Center for Patient Safety, and president of the Jackson Health System medical staff, is vice speaker of the Florida Medical Association. “The Physician Leadership Academy is based on a similar program provided by the FMA. Leveraging local leaders with requisite expertise was a fantastic idea that has proved quite successful for this group,” Lenchus said. “I am proud that UM was so competently represented by such capable colleagues.”

Beginning with a retreat in October 2016, and concluding with presentations of the leadership projects taken on by the graduates during their eight-month curriculum, the physicians dedicated weekends to attending seminars and spending what little free time they had left to complete projects and hone leadership skills.
