Honor Your Caregiver

In recognition of National Caregivers Day on Feb. 16, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, has kicked off its annual “Honor Your Caregiver” campaign.

The campaign recognizes the exceptional and compassionate care delivered by Sylvester’s nurses, medical assistants, technicians, therapists, nutritionists and countless others who selflessly provide the care that sustains patients along their cancer journey.

Through their dedication and skill, these extraordinary caregivers touch people’s lives in immeasurable ways every day.

Kara Sher (left, with her mother) says Sylvester’s staff provides her with the wisdom and strength to support her mom.

One of those people is Kara Sher, whose mother has had chronic lymphocytic leukemia for more than 20 years and last year was diagnosed with a highly aggressive large B-cell lymphoma.

“When you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, you quickly learn that it takes a village of care and support to thrive along the way,” said Sher. “Sylvester’s caregivers ensure that my mom and I have the support we need on Sylvester’s campus and at home. I know that I can support my mom because of the knowledge and strength I receive from them. Their kindness and compassion rise above all measures.”

Gratitude is at the heart of Sylvester’s “Honor Your Caregiver” campaign. It is an opportunity for individuals to express their appreciation, through their heartfelt letters and donations, for the exemplary care they or their loved ones receive at Sylvester.

“At Sylvester, we seek to reduce the human burden from cancer and other serious illnesses through research, education, prevention and the delivery of quality patient care. Fundamental to that mission are the invaluable caregivers who interact with our patients and their families throughout the cancer journey,” said Sylvester Director Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., also the Oscar de la Renta Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and executive dean of research at the Miller School. “Our ‘Honor Your Caregiver’ campaign celebrates our caregivers’ unwavering commitment to making a profound difference in the lives of our patients and their families.”

To support the “Honor Your Caregiver” campaign, grateful patients and their loved ones are invited to write a note of appreciation and make a gift to invest in Sylvester, ensuring that all cancer patients receive access to the most devoted, multidisciplinary team of providers.
