Iron Arrow Taps Five from Miller School of Medicine

With the telltale beating of a single drum and a tap on the shoulder with an iron arrow, members of the Iron Arrow Honor Society renewed one of the U’s greatest traditions during homecoming week. Marching across the Coral Gables and medical campuses in a solemn procession, they bestowed a leading University of Miami honor on 20 lucky recipients — membership in the organization that recognizes students, faculty, staff, and alumni who exemplify love of alma mater, character, leadership, scholarship, and humility.

Tomas A. Salerno, M.D.

Five of the inductees were from the Miller School of Medicine:

Jordan Balke – Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, and a member of Biomedical Graduate Student Government.

Julia Belkowitz, M.D. – Assistant regional dean for student affairs, pediatric clerkship director and Transitions to Clinical Rotations course director.

Rachel Deitz – M.D./M.P.H. candidate, executive director of Regional Medical Campus Student Government.

Fiorella Magani – Ph.D. candidate in cancer biology, Cancer Biology Program senator, parliamentarian and vice president for student advocacy in Biomedical Graduate Student Government.

Tomas A. Salerno, M.D. – Chair of the University of Miami Faculty Senate and chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Another inductee, tapped on the Coral Gables campus, is a UM student with strong ties to the Miller School:

Noureen Ahmed – President and executive board member of Relay for Life, and a volunteer at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Schiff Center for Liver Diseases.

A full list of the fall inductees is available on the Iron Arrow website.
