Like father, like…daughter.

Community and contribution define Sofia Rodriguez’s outlook and aspirations. As a child, she only had to look across the dinner table to see how she could turn ambition into a fulfilling career.

As a Miami native with a father who completed his fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Sofia Rodriguez was naturally drawn to medicine and UM. After studying applied physiology and kinesiology at the University of Florida, Rodriguez began medical school this year, enrolling in the Class of 2028.

We spoke with Rodriguez to learn more about her passion for medicine.

Why do you want to become a physician?

I’ve always wanted to help and inspire others to lead healthy, balanced lives, tailored to their individual needs and goals. I also have a strong interest in neuroscience research, specifically how movement and disease impact the way we live. I plan to use this knowledge to benefit my future patients.

Why did you choose the Miller School and what do you hope to gain from your experience here?

My father had an amazing experience during his pulmonary/critical care fellowship at the Miller School. I chose to follow in his footsteps and contribute to the community that has given me so much. I hope to develop as a leader and physician, serving this community through my work.

What kind of physician do you aspire to be?

I aspire to be a compassionate, forward-thinking physician who is committed to serving the community. I also hope to develop the resilience and patience needed to tackle the health care challenges we face while advocating for both patients and health care workers.

What’s something you want people to know about you?

I’m passionate about fitness and enjoy helping others discover their favorite forms of exercise.

A fitness advocate, Sofia wants to complete a century ride.

For me, it’s road cycling. My longest ride so far is 70 miles, and I hope to one day ride a century—100 miles!
