The 60 students, faculty, residents and fellows from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine who were inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and 30 students who were welcomed into the Gold Humanism Honor Society exhibit the values of these esteemed organizations and reflect important tenets of the Miller School mission.

Induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and AOA demonstrates professional accomplishment and a deep commitment to the core values of medicine.

“These individuals serve as role models in medicine,” said Gauri Agarwal, M.D., associate dean for curriculum and associate professor of medicine and medical education at the Miller School. “They exemplify humanistic care and represent the highest ideals of our profession.”

Founded in 1902, AOA is a national medical honor society that recognizes outstanding academic achievement, leadership, service and a strong commitment to the values of the medical profession. Fewer than one in six medical students are chosen for membership.

“Being selected by your peers for the compassion and empathy you show in your patient care is a huge deal, and it is truly well-deserved,” said Terry Derias, M.D. Class of 2025 and the 2024-2025 president of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. “The extra time you spend with patients and the small things you do to go out of your way for others don’t go unnoticed. I am very proud of each of you for leading with kindness.”
