Each spring, distinguished medical students, faculty and residents from across the nation are selected to join the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently hosted a dual ceremony to honor its exceptional cohort of inductees, marking a significant milestone in their academic and professional journeys.
Forty medical students, eight fellows and five faculty members were inducted into the Alpha Miami chapter. Founded in 1902, the medical honor society selects its members based on their disposition to help advance the practice of medicine through their commitment to scholarship, leadership, professionalism and service.
The Gold Humanism Honor Society Miami Chapter welcomed 30 medical students from the Miller School. These individuals have consistently exemplified the values of compassionate care that embodies the ethos of the organization, which formed in 2002.
Bjorn Herman, M.D., assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology, received special recognition during the ceremony for his outstanding dedication to teaching, compassion and mentorship within his department. He was honored with the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award for his exemplary commitment to nurturing the next generation of health care professionals and fostering a culture of kindness and empathy in medicine. Roen Wheeler, Class of 2024, was the award’s student recipient.
“The Gold Humanism Honor Society is a community of medical students and physicians selected by their peers for their compassionate care,” said Gauri Agarwal, M.D., associate professor of medicine and associate dean for curriculum at the Miller School. “The inducted students exemplify humanistic patient care and serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine. They exemplify the highest ideals of our profession.”
