“These rankings reflect our commitment to remain and continuously improve as a preeminent medical school, leading the way in training the next generation of physicians and physician-scientists, and advancing meaningful research for some of the most complex diseases,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School.

The U.S. News “Best Graduate Schools” rankings are based on a weighted average of eight indicators, including peer assessment of quality, research activity through NIH grants, student selectivity, and faculty resources.

The National Institutes of Health research grants awarded to faculty at the Miller School totaled nearly $153 million in 2021, maintaining its No. 40 national ranking. It remains the top federally funded medical school in the state of Florida, reflecting its commitment to lead cutting-edge medical research.

Diversity Ranking Also Moves Up

The diversity ranking, started in 2021 by U.S. News, is based on two indicators that measure absolute and relative diversity. The largest factor is the percentage of underrepresented minority medical students enrolled in the medical school. Another factor is comparing the underrepresented minority enrollment of private schools to national figures. Public schools are compared to their state percentage. Underrepresented minorities include people who identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.

“The rankings also show our efforts are paying off to ensure our students, faculty and alumni reflect the true diversity of South Florida and, in turn, the United States,” Dr. Ford added.
