Future Doctors Flock to Miami for Miller School’s Second Look Weekend
Nearly 200 admitted medical students from across the country explored academic programs, campus life and community at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Second Look Weekend.

Nearly 200 pre-med students from around the nation converged on the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine campus for Second Look, an annual event designed to give future doctors a closer look at life as a medical student.
Held April 24-25, the series of events offered a deep dive into academic offerings, student life and campus culture, drawing participants from dozens of states. The turnout reflects growing in-person engagement as medical schools nationwide seek to personalize admissions experiences and help candidates make informed decisions in an increasingly competitive environment.
“These students love Second Look because it helps them picture what their educational experience will be like here,” said Mayte Reyes, Ed.D, director of admissions at the Miller School. “They get to talk with current students and meet the faculty who will shape their training.”

Programming included campus tours, information sessions about academic offerings, panel discussions with current students, presentations about student organizations and Q&A forums with medical education leaders and faculty, giving attendees an insider perspective into daily life at the Miller School. The admitted students also participated in program-specific sessions about dual-degree options and other specialty pathways.
The Heart of Miami
A highlight was a reception hosted in Brickell, the heart of the city and home to many Miller School students, offering visitors a glimpse of life beyond campus.
For many attendees, the experience proved pivotal.
“What really stood out was how supportive and connected the students seem,” said an admitted student from California. “I can imagine myself here.”
Second Look also served as an opportunity for students to begin forming connections with future classmates, mentors and support networks that will carry them through their medical training.
“Seeing our future class engage so enthusiastically with our community and with one another reinforces why we host Second Look,” said Louis Pizano, M.D., M.B.A., associate dean of admissions and professor in the Miller School’s DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. “It’s the first step in building a community that will shape leaders in medicine.”
