Miller School’s Incoming Class Welcomed with Stethoscopes
Only hours into her orientation at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Isabella Ferre was thrilled to receive one of the most recognized symbols of the medical profession.

The first-year medical student took the brand-new stethoscope out of the box that sat before her, and reflected on what it meant to wear the iconic medical device.
“It symbolizes all of the hard work that we, as a class, put in to getting into medical school,” Ferre said. “So it is a sense of accomplishment, but also a sense of duty, because this is the epitome of being a doctor.”
The stethoscope was provided by the School’s Medical Alumni Association through its “Stethoscopes for Students” initiative.

The program is designed to provide incoming medical students with their first stethoscope, as a way of welcoming them to the Miller School. Each stethoscope had the Miller School name inscribed on it.
“It definitely makes me feel a little closer to my goal,” said student Emily Mejia. “It makes me feel included and proud to be a part of such a good school.”
The stethoscopes were presented to the M.D. Class of 2022 during their orientation day on August 9, and then the M.D./M.P.H class a day later.

“It is our hope you will use this gift throughout your career knowing you are always a part of the Miller School family,” said Robin Straus Furlong, M.D. ’82, president of the Medical Alumni Association.
The Class of 2022 is the fourth freshman class to be given stethoscopes on orientation day. The initiative is made possible through the generosity of alumni and faculty.
The gift not only alleviates the cost of a needed medical tool, but also forges more of an instant connection to the medical school.

“This much-used tool of the medical profession will be a continual reminder that an alumnus or faculty member from our school made an investment on the student’s behalf,” said Alex J. Mechaber, M.D. ’94, professor of medicine and senior associate dean for undergraduate medical education. “It is a great way to be welcomed into the Miller School.”
