Remembering Dr. Pedro Salas, Miller School Scientist, Mentor and Cherished Colleague
Pedro J. Salas, M.D., Ph.D., a respected cell biologist, educator and mentor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, leaves a lasting legacy of scientific discovery, graduate education leadership and dedication to generations of students and researchers.

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine community mourns the loss of Pedro J. Salas, M.D., Ph.D., a highly respected scientist, educator, mentor and friend whose decades of service helped shape generations of researchers and advance our understanding of cell biology. Dr. Salas leaves behind a legacy of scientific excellence, intellectual curiosity and unwavering dedication to education.
A professor in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology (called the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy when Dr. Salas joined the Miller School in 1992), Dr. Salas dedicated his career to understanding how the cells that line organs such as the kidneys and intestines (epithelial cells) maintain their structure, organization and function. His research revealed how these cells correctly sort and position proteins, create protective barriers that regulate what enters and leaves tissues and maintain the specialized surfaces needed for healthy organ function.
A Career Dedicated to Understanding Cell Biology
Dr. Salas helped uncover the cellular processes that keep these protective layers working properly and what happens when they fail. His later studies showed how disruptions in these systems can trigger inflammation and contribute to serious intestinal diseases, including certain forms of severe diarrhea and rare genetic disorders. By connecting fundamental cell biology to human disease, his work advanced scientific understanding and laid the foundation for future discoveries aimed at improving patient care.
Dr. Salas sustained a continuous, National Institutes of Health-funded research program throughout his career, authoring more than 60 publications and abstracts in high-profile journals. He was a frequent speaker at national and international professional meetings in his field.
Born and educated in Argentina, Dr. Salas earned his medical degree, a doctorate in biophysics and a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Buenos Aires before pursuing postdoctoral training at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and Cornell University Medical College. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Salas worked at the Instituto Campomar in Buenos Aires. He joined the Miller School as an assistant professor, rising to the rank of professor with tenure in 2008.
A Mentor Who Shaped Generations
Colleagues knew Dr. Salas for his generosity, humility and tireless dedication to students. Dr. Salas devoted countless hours to lecturing and demonstrating in the Miller School’s anatomy and histology curriculum. He also taught numerous graduate school courses in cell biology and pharmacology and served as the first permanent director of the Program in Biomedical Sciences, the gateway to all graduate education at the Miller School, from 2013 to 2022. He trained graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and mentored clinical fellows during their residencies. Dr. Salas was active on more than a dozen Miller School committees, including more than thirteen years as faculty council representative for the Department of Cell Biology.
Those who worked alongside him remember not only his intellectual rigor but also his kindness and collegiality. Even in the face of serious illness, he never lost his commitment to science and education.
“For the past several years, Pedro faced cancer with remarkable courage and determination, continuing his research and teaching and working to complete one last paper while maintaining his laboratory until only a few weeks ago,” said Richard Rotundo, Ph.D., professor of cell and systems biology at the Miller School and a close friend and longtime colleague.
