An eager group of pre-med students, many accompanied by parents, siblings and supporters, recently came to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine campus to get a second look at what the school has to offer. They have an important decision to make, and the admissions team wants to be sure their future students are well informed.

Second Look is a series of events and informational sessions that provide students who have been accepted into the Miller School of Medicine an in-depth look into its academic programs, student life and more.

Second Look invited pre-med students to check out the Miller School’s programs.

“The admissions committee did a fabulous job picking the students we accepted. You possess all the key attributes we look for: intelligence, curiosity, creativity and tenacity,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer at the Miller School, at the opening information session. “There is no other profession that can impact human life like a doctor can. Let us be the school that helps you get there and realize your dream.”

The pre-meds connected with current Miller School students, toured the campus, engaged with faculty, learned about student services and gained insight into the educational paths the school offers. Most importantly, they were able to speak with faculty members and curriculum leaders about NextGenMD, the school’s innovative curriculum.

This access provided a valuable perspective on the Miller School’s commitment to student success.

“We are choosing good doctors and good people to be part of the Miller School of Medicine family,” said Louis Pizano, M.D., M.B.A., associate dean of admissions and professor in the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. “Here, you really can flourish, learn from experts and develop role models in everything from research to clinical realms to work-life balance.”

The extensive program concluded with an in-person reception in Coconut Grove, where students were able to relax, learn more about their future peers and get to know another area of the vibrant city they may soon be calling home.

“The campus tours were an incredible way to explore all the opportunities for med students to get involved. Leaving that tour, I felt confident that I would find my place at Miller,” said Michel Huyghe, a pre-med student at the University of Miami. “Second Look left me even more excited to call this place home for the next four years.”
