The Society of Urologic Oncology recently approved Sylvester’s application for a new fellowship program to complement the current clinically focused fellowship positions. “This is the highest accreditation in urology for an oncology fellowship,” said Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., chairman of the Department of Urology and director of robotic surgery. “It is another step forward on Sylvester’s journey to excellence in education, research and clinical care.”

Mark L. Gonzalgo, M.D., Ph.D., professor of urology and director of the fellowship, said that Society of Urologic Oncology accreditation will allow Sylvester to attract talented urologists planning a career in oncology research and clinical care. “We look forward to continuing to train future leaders in this field,” he said.

The accreditation by the Society of Urologic Oncology followed a review of Sylvester’s research and training programs, including a site visit last July, said Dr. Gonzalgo.  It builds on the momentum from Sylvester’s achieving National Cancer Institute designation as one of the nation’s leading academic oncology centers.

“The society’s accreditation validates the outstanding level of clinical, research and educational opportunities we offer our fellows,” said Dr. Gonzalgo. “This accomplishment would not have been possible without the support of Sylvester’s director, Stephen Nimer, M.D., and his leadership team.”

Dr. Gonzalgo said the urology department is now accepting applications for the new fellowship position, which will be available in July 2021. “It adds a new dimension to our program as our multidisciplinary team in urologic oncology looks forward to training a new generation of leaders in translational, clinical, and basic science.”
