New Chair Brings Vision for Innovation and Growth to Interventional Radiology
Stephen Solomon, M.D., joins the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine with a vision to advance innovation, research and multidisciplinary patient care in interventional radiology.
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UHealth—University of Miami Health System are welcoming an internationally recognized leader in interventional oncology as Stephen Solomon, M.D., joins as chair of the Department of Interventional Radiology.
Drawing on substantial experience at one of the world’s premier cancer centers, Dr. Solomon arrives in Miami with a clear vision to elevate interventional radiology as a true clinical specialty, expanding innovation and research and deepening its integration within multidisciplinary clinical care.
Dr. Solomon comes to UHealth and the Miller School from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he served as chief of interventional radiology, held the Enid A. Haupt Endowed Chair in Clinical Investigation and was professor of radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Over the course of his career, he built an international reputation for advancing minimally invasive, image-guided therapies and helped define the field of interventional radiology.
“Dr. Solomon’s experience is critical to advancing the department’s academic goals and supporting our mission-based strategy through innovative, image-guided therapies, multidisciplinary care and excellence across patient care, research and education,” said Dipen J. Parekh, M.D., UHealth chief executive officer and founding director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, the Magnier Endowed Chair in Urology and the Victor A. Politano Endowed Chair in Urology at the Miller School.
“With a strong track record of leadership in academic medicine and multidisciplinary care, we are confident that Dr. Solomon’s leadership will help shape the next chapter of interventional radiology at the Miller School,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School.
Why Miami: Independence, Innovation and Opportunity
For Dr. Solomon, the decision to come to the University of Miami was driven in large part by the institution’s recognition of interventional radiology as an independent department. That organizational distinction signals the specialty’s growing importance in modern medicine.
“As its own department at the Miller School, interventional radiology can represent its unique needs and enable us to deliver exceptional patient care, innovative research and inspiring education,” Dr. Solomon said.
He describes the department as a potential national model for how interventional radiology can thrive as a standalone specialty, advancing both patient care and innovation.
Driving Innovation Through Collaboration
Equally important in his decision is the innovative culture of the University of Miami and the surrounding region. Dr. Solomon noted the institution’s openness to new ideas and cross-disciplinary collaboration as key factors that align with his own approach to academic medicine.
“I’m a person who’s always thinking, ‘How can we make something better?’” he said. “We have an opportunity to really leverage the growth and the creative spirit that exists here.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Solomon plans to strengthen the department’s identity as a comprehensive clinical service that supports patients throughout their care journey, from diagnosis to treatment and long-term follow-up. His goal is to position interventional radiology not only as a procedural specialty, but as a central, patient-facing discipline that manages care continuously over time.
“I want to build the department as a true clinical specialty that sees patients in continuity,” he said. “From the time of diagnosis to definitive therapy and then in follow-up.”
Innovation will be another cornerstone of his leadership. Dr. Solomon wants to take full advantage of UM’s abundant talents and resources to develop new technologies and accelerate the translation of research into clinical care.
“There are many new technologies that we can utilize to benefit our patients,” he continued.
Central to that vision is a strong and evolving relationship with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center and part of UHealth. Dr. Solomon sees interventional radiology being part of the cancer patient’s journey, from beginning to end. The team science approach, where researchers and clinicians work side by side in pursuit of new therapies, is one of UHealth’s strengths, said Dr. Solomon.
“I’m very excited to collaborate with my esteemed colleagues at UHealth, who tirelessly work to advance patient care,” he said.
