Sylvester Honors the Woman’s Cancer Association

For nearly 60 years, the Woman’s Cancer Association of the University of Miami has supported cancer research, education and patients’ needs. On June 7, the WCA was honored in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Lennar Foundation Medical Center. This special celebration marked the dedication of a patient lounge on the fourth floor that now bears the group’s name.

From left, Adam Carlin, Bill Tenney, Lourdes Beltran and Dr. Stephen D. Nimer cut the ribbon.

“The difference that you’re making is extraordinary. On behalf of the board of Sylvester, our patients’ loved ones, and our community, I thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” said Adam Carlin, chair of the Sylvester Board of Overseers.

This year alone the WCA provided eight research grants to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UM Miller School of Medicine totaling $337,126.

Sylvester Director Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., thanked WCA for the grant program, which helps fund Sylvester’s best scientists and researchers. Naming a patient lounge for the WCA is a way to show appreciation for the special partnership. “So that the patients who come here can notice and acknowledge the tremendous support we’ve gotten over the years from the Woman’s Cancer Association,” said Nimer.

The celebration started with a rooftop reception where WCA President Lourdes Beltran received a plaque in recognition of more than 50 years of commitment and advocacy for Sylvester.

“To members who are present, and those that are not, I want to share this prestigious moment by saying yes we can, and yes we did,” said Beltran. “This is a great way to recognize the unselfishness and the efforts by so many of our members for such a noble cause.”
