Sylvester’s Dr. Gilberto Lopes Promoted to Editor-in-Chief of Global Cancer Journal

After spending two years as an associate editor for the Journal of Global Oncology, Gilberto Lopes, M.D., M.B.A., medical director for International Programs at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, was recently named the new editor-in-chief of the journal.

Following the recruitment and nomination processes, Lopes submitted his ideas and goals for improving the journal. Next up was an extensive phone interview with senior members, staff and leadership of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), which launched the open-access journal in 2015. The journal’s publisher “called me a few weeks later to give me the good news,” Lopes said.

Lopes’ first reaction was a mix of “joy and a great sense of responsibility. Global oncology is a new academic field with the tall order to improve cancer control and care in areas of the world with limited resources,” he said.

More than 400 manuscripts from around the world have been submitted to the journal to date. The emerging field addresses biological differences and disparities in cancer prevention, care, research, education, and its global social and human impact.

Lopes encourages submissions from more countries and studies specifically addressing implementation science, developing registries in limited-resource settings, health economics, and policy research geared toward low- and middle-income countries.
