The award is given each year to an oncology social worker who is considered a model for the profession. FSOSW has a lengthy list of qualifications that those nominating potential recipients must consider, including professional skills, personal integrity, advocacy for patients, intellectual curiosity, compassion for patients and their families, and the ability to work as part of a team.

“Three other social workers and I met back in July and decided to nominate Elise,” said Lisa Merheb, MSW, LCSW, Sylvester’s director of social services–oncology, and James’ supervisor. “We selected her because of her outstanding work and involvement with Sylvester’s stem cell program, and her critical role in the program’s development.”

James, who has worked at Sylvester since September of 2015, but has been with the Miller School since 2004, received the award during a luncheon ceremony at FSOSW’s Annual Conference on October 11. The award winner is not announced in advance.

“It was a big surprise when I saw my husband and my son show up at the luncheon,” said James. “I thought, ‘Why are they here?’ But my confusion turned to feeling really honored when it was announced that I was the winner. It’s very nice to be recognized for the work I do. I get to help people in the most difficult time in their lives, and having the ability to make even small impact on their families is priceless.”
