Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has achieved full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), becoming one of a select group of rectal cancer programs in the United States to meet this rigorous standard.
The accreditation, awarded by the American College of Surgeons, recognizes Sylvester’s commitment to delivering high-quality, multidisciplinary care for patients with rectal cancer.
“I believe the NAPRC accreditation elevates Sylvester among the best centers for rectal cancer care in the United States. The accreditation really highlights our team’s commitment to the highest standards of care nationwide,” said David Zhang, M.D., director of the rectal cancer program. “At Sylvester we strive to provide the highest quality of care for our rectal cancer patients by incorporating the latest evidence-based guidelines with a patient-centered review of each case in a multidisciplinary setting. The NAPRC accreditation is reflective of our strong culture of close collaboration among the different providers involved in all facets of rectal cancer management.”

To meet NAPRC requirements, Sylvester implemented several key improvements, including the establishment of a dedicated rectal cancer tumor board, the development of standardized diagnostic and treatment protocols and the appointment of a program coordinator. These enhancements ensure that patients receive coordinated, evidence-based care from a team of specialists across surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology and pathology.
ACS Surgical Quality Partner
With this accreditation, Sylvester is also recognized as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, a designation that highlights the institution’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards in surgical care.
The significance of NAPRC accreditation extends beyond recognition. It promotes best practices in rectal cancer treatment and improves the efficiency of care delivery. By reducing variations in care and identifying areas for improvement, the accreditation process helps institutions like Sylvester continuously elevate the quality of their services. It also serves as a public seal of trust, validating compliance with national standards and assuring patients and stakeholders that the appropriate structures and processes are in place. This level of transparency and accountability reinforces Sylvester’s role as a leader in cancer care.
“I believe that full accreditation of our rectal cancer program highlights our commitment to the highest standards of rectal cancer care and will attract future research initiatives to further the well-being of patients living with rectal cancer,” said Dr. Zhang.
Excellence in Patient Care
In addition to its symbolic value, the accreditation brings tangible benefits to both patients and the institution. It enhances the patient experience by ensuring care is structured, consistent and centered around individual needs. The standards also support programs in securing resources for patient-centered services, giving patients confidence that the rectal cancer program is deeply invested in delivering quality care.
The NAPRC framework challenges institutions to provide optimal, high-quality care and directly influences how care is delivered. It offers a clear methodology for continuous quality improvement and long-term growth in cancer services. This milestone reinforces Sylvester’s leadership in cancer care and its ongoing pursuit of excellence in clinical quality and patient outcomes.
