UHealth Doral Opens, Expanding Academic Medicine in South Florida
Academic medicine is expanding into the Doral community with the opening of UHealth Doral Medical Center. Building on its promise to increase access to state-of-the-art medicine, UHealth — University of Miami Health System’s new facility in Downtown Doral is opening a new gateway of medical care to more than 80,000 residents.
“UHealth Doral is the culmination of years of planning to create more access points for patients to receive top-notch care close to their homes,” said Dipen Parekh, M.D., chief operating officer for UHealth. “It’s inspiring to see how this project has come together, knowing that we are satisfying a true need for South Florida communities as the only academic medical center in our region. It’s really just the beginning of where we are headed as a health system.”
Excellence Across Renowned Specialties
UHealth Doral is a six-story facility, covering 160,000 square feet. Each floor of the new enterprise holds various specialties, from cardiovascular care to vascular surgery, gastroenterology, endocrinology and dermatology. There is also orthopaedics and otolaryngology, urologic care from the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, and cancer services from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
The medical center houses 33 clinical treatment units to accommodate patients and their families, eight operating rooms and more than 60 exam rooms. It’s also equipped with complete imaging services, interventional radiology and three GI endoscopy suites.
“The biggest advantage for patients in Doral is that they now have local access in their community to the providers and services that adhere to the mission of UHealth’s academic medicine practices,” said David Kerman, M.D., chief medical director for UHealth Doral. “Our physicians are providing cutting-edge care and leading technology compassionately to the people living in the Doral community.”
Designed With Patients in Mind
In addition to the excellence in health care and convenient location, UHealth Doral was designed with patients and their families in mind, which is evidenced by the new providers and support staff.
“This has been a journey filled with dedication, collaboration and an unwavering focus on providing excellent, patient-centered care for our community,” said Rafic Warwar, chief ambulatory officer for UHealth. “We have assembled the best health care team to offer expanded and convenient access to leading-edge care. Most importantly, this facility was designed and constructed with active input from our patients, families and providers, ensuring that our patients remained at the forefront of every aspect of its design and the overall health care experience.”
Patients at UHealth Doral can expect the same level of care in the new facility for which the health system is renowned. In addition, patients will be able to schedule most of their clinical care under one roof. Each care team will tailor a coordinated care effort to the patient’s needs and provide an access point to all the services UHealth offers at all locations.
“This is a monumental time for UHealth with the birth of UHealth Doral,” added DeDe Austin, assistant vice president of ambulatory services. “We’re dedicated to caring for our community, and this facility allows us to fulfill that mission on an even larger scale. We strive for the best clinical outcomes and service excellence, making history with UHealth Doral.”
UHealth Doral is the latest of several upcoming projects the health system is undertaking. Two more projects are set to open in 2025, starting with the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building. In fall 2025, UHealth SoLé Mia will bring academic medicine to North Miami, marking UHealth’s largest ambulatory project to date.
