Endowed Chairs Honor Bascom Palmer Leaders Advancing Vision Research

That vision came to life September 8, when Bascom Palmer Eye Institute celebrated two of its most accomplished faculty members during a special ceremony made possible by the generosity of the Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Foundation and the Spencer family, longtime supporters of Bascom Palmer and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Eduardo Alfonso, M.D., professor of ophthalmology at the Miller School, was honored with the Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology Research. Daniel Pelaez, Ph.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at the Miller School, received the inaugural Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Endowed Chair in Retinal Research.
How Endowed Chairs Advance Vision Research
Among the highest academic honors a university can bestow, endowed chairs provide distinguished faculty members with resources to pursue bold ideas, accelerate discovery and translate research into advances that improve lives.
“Endowed chair ceremonies like this one give us an opportunity to pause and recognize the remarkable achievements of our distinguished faculty members,” said Henri Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer at the Miller School. “Through their commitment to excellence in research, innovation and patient care, they’re advancing the future of medicine and improving the lives of countless patients around the world. We’re exceptionally grateful to the Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Foundation and the Spencer family, whose vision and generosity made this celebration possible.”
Honoring Dr. Alfonso’s Legacy in Ophthalmology
An internationally recognized expert in corneal disease, ocular infections and transplantation, Dr. Alfonso has performed more than 1,000 corneal transplants and authored more than 300 scientific publications.
His influence extends far beyond the operating room. As director of Bascom Palmer from 2007 through this year and longtime chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, he helped guide the institution through an era of extraordinary growth and achievement. During his tenure, U.S. News & World Report ranked Bascom Palmer the nation’s top eye hospital every year.
“Dr. Alfonso has helped shape the field of ophthalmology through his leadership, innovation, research and dedication to patient care,” said Dipen Parekh, M.D., chief executive officer of UHealth—University of Miami Health System and executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Miami. “He always finds time to listen to a patient, to listen to a colleague, to answer a call and to help people.”
Although he recently stepped down as director of Bascom Palmer, Dr. Alfonso continues to care for patients, lead research efforts and expand access to vision care around the world through digital health technologies.
“This endowment will improve the well-being of humankind and help alleviate the suffering for countless individuals,” said Dr. Alfonso. “It will help develop transformative, digital, vision-monitoring technology for underserved patients, nurture creativity, accelerate discovery and foster collaboration that translates knowledge into hope and healing.”
He noted that the support also strengthens the missions of the University of Miami, the Miller School and Bascom Palmer by providing enduring resources for science, education and service.
“A collective effort can achieve extraordinary things,” said Dr. Alfonso. “When individuals unite around a common purpose, the power of the ‘we’ becomes transformational.”
Supporting Dr. Pelaez’s Retinal Research
For Dr. Pelaez, the endowed chair recognizes both a record of achievement and a future filled with possibility.
His research spans age-related macular degeneration, orbital tumors, traumatic optic neuropathy, optic nerve regeneration, retinoblastoma and ocular cancers. His team holds several patents and is developing a therapeutic compound for glaucoma, as well as potential treatments for neurodegenerative diseases affecting the retina and brain.
Pradeep Ramulu, M.D., M.H.S., Ph.D., director of Bascom Palmer and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, praised Dr. Pelaez for his innovation, leadership and dedication to mentoring the next generation of scientists.
“He’s an exceptional scientist, innovator and leader whose work will redefine what’s possible,” Dr. Ramulu said.
Dr. Pelaez, who also serves as scientific director of the Dr. Nasser Al-Rashid Vision Research Center, views the chair not as a culmination, but as a responsibility to push scientific discovery even further.
“I don’t see this chair as the culmination of my past work, but as a challenge that carries both motivation and accountability,” said Dr. Pelaez. “It raises the bar for me to discover more, mentor better, collaborate more boldly and create a future in which fewer people lose the gift of sight.”
He credits mentors and colleagues for building a culture that encourages ambitious thinking while remaining focused on improving patient outcomes.
“Science advances fastest when it’s uncomfortable, and I’m fortunate to work with people who are not afraid to ask the most difficult questions,” said Dr. Pelaez. “This chair gives us the freedom to pursue promising ideas before they are fully formed and remain committed when an important problem refuses to yield a quick answer.”
