For the 6th straight year, David Reis, Ph.D., the University of Miami’s senior vice president and chief information and digital officer, was named one of the “Hospital and Health System CIOs to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review.

Each year, Becker’s compiles a list of the top hospital and health system CIOs in the country. This year, 148 leaders were recognized by Becker’s for their expertise in utilizing the latest technologies to improve patient care and providers. Dr. Reis has made his mark in this space with his IT and AI initiatives at the university and UHealth – University of Miami Health System to once again merit the honor.

“It is a tremendous privilege to continue being recognized among the nation’s leading CIOs,” Dr. Reis said. “This honor reflects the dedication of our team and the unwavering support from the university and the UHealth community. Together, we are committed to harnessing technology’s full potential to advance patient care, drive innovation and set new standards for excellence in medical education.”

Celebrating Leadership and Innovation

Dr. Reis continues to take the university’s digital implementations to new heights. His team has worked on more than 200 AI projects, ranging from clinical care injury predictive models to revenue cycle initiatives using conversational AI patient scheduling.

“There has never been a better time to be in IT,” Dr. Reis said. “We are thriving as a health system, and as we grow and expand, we will continue diving into these new technologies.”

We witness months and years of incremental progress, then suddenly these innovations change our lives. The key is to harness these tools and make them work for us as we navigate this new digital frontier.

Current IT projects Dr. Reis and his team are working on include using voice detection to better direct patient phone calls and AI ambient voice dictation, so physicians can focus on their dialog with patients and let the AI document the patient visit in the patient’s medical record. Dr. Reis also envisions robotics playing an essential role in health care, a space the health system is diving deeper into with robotics-assisted practices. His leadership has driven UHealth to become one of the top 10% of AI users in the country.

“Our work exists to benefit patient care, training the next generation of physicians and enabling groundbreaking research.  Dr. Reis said. “We are heavily investing in new technologies as we adapt early to this changing landscape. It’s a great time to be a part of the university and UHealth as we continue to innovate our IT and AI practices.”

Moving Forward

Most recently, Dr. Reis has brought Microsoft Copilot® to the university for all of its faculty, staff and graduate students. His current focus is on generative AI, particularly agents that streamline and enhance the efficiency of daily tasks. Always thinking ahead, Dr. Reis and his team will partake in a retreat where discussions will take place on what IT will look like for the university.

The team has even tested making a digital avatar that mimics facial movements and speech sounds. Building out trainings in AI is also in the works as the technology becomes a part of everyday life.

“We witness months and years of incremental progress, then suddenly these innovations change our lives,” Dr. Reis said. “The key is to harness these tools and make them work for us as we navigate this new digital frontier.”
