The event, which took place at the Shalala Student Center on the Coral Gables campus, included 50 presentations, a graduation ceremony for 11 fellows, and scientific poster sessions.

“Our research efforts over the years have been very significant and led to creation of our Division of Research in Skin Biology and Dermatologic Sciences,” said Marjana Tomic-Canic, Ph.D., the department’s new vice chair of research, who, with department chair Robert S. Kirsner, M.D., Ph.D., co-hosted Research Day. “Our goal is to utilize cutting-edge technologies to advance the science of skin biology and bring new discoveries from the bench to patients at the bedside.

“In our effort to reach this goal, we provide an extraordinary training base for clinical, translational and basic science research,” she said. “Skin biology is so complex and multidisciplinary that it integrates well with training curriculums. Recently, we introduced the nation’s first master of science degree in skin biology and dermatological sciences.

“In addition, we support a residency research program that offers Ph.D.-to-residency and residency research tracks, combining research and clinical training. Many of our faculty are members of the PIBS (Programs in the Biomedical Sciences) graduate program, and they are mentoring graduate students. Our trainees and faculty frequently present their research at national and international conferences and it is important to dedicate a day to recognize these accomplishments, and to facilitate collaborations and interactions within our own community. ”
