Dr. David Kushner Named Medical Director of Credentialing and Privileging

David S. Kushner, M.D., clinical professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, has been named medical director of credentialing and privileging for the University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG) and the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics (UMHC).

In that role, Dr. Kushner will have the responsibility, in conjunction with the Credentialing and Medical Staff Services Department, for ensuring that threshold qualifications are met and continuously maintained by all applicants for appointment, reappointment, or clinical privileges.

He will be the chair and a voting member of the UMMG/UMHC Credentialing Committee, and will be responsible for overseeing the credentialing and privileging processes and policies for the organization. In addition, he will be a voting member of the Hospital’s Medical Executive Committee, Bylaws Committee and Practitioner Health and Wellness Committee.

Dr. Kushner has served on the Miller School faculty since 1994. He received his M.D. degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine, completed his internship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida, and his residency at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is board certified in Neurology, a Fellow member of the American Academy of Neurology and holds a secondary appointment at the School of Nursing and Health Studies. He served on the State of Florida, Department of Health, Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program Advisory Council 2009 through 2014, including service in the position of the Advisory Council Chair.

Dr. Kushner has been the Medical Director for the UM Rehabilitation program at Encompass Health Miami (formerly HealthSouth Miami) since 1998. At Encompass Health, he has also served as the hospital’s Program Director for the Joint Commission-certified Stroke Rehabilitation Program since 2010. He has been Chief of the Rehabilitation Medicine consult service for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Jackson South Medical Center since 2016.

He has served on the UMMG Credentials Committee since 1995, including as interim chair, as associate medical director for medical staff privileging at UMH, and as interim medical director for UMHC/UMMG Medical Staff Privileging.
