Dr. Steven L. Cohn Receives SHM Individual Award for Excellence in Teaching

Steven L. Cohn, M.D., is the recipient of the 2017 Society of Hospital Medicine’s Individual Award for Excellence in Teaching, its highest award that honors best practices in hospital medicine. He established the preoperative medical clinic and directed the medical consultation service for almost 30 years at SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn before joining the University of Miami Health System to serve as medical director of the UHealth Preoperative Assessment Center. He is also the director of medical consultation services at University of Miami Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

“I’ve devoted my career to perioperative medicine and feel proud and honored to receive this prestigious award from the Society of Hospital Medicine,” Cohn said.

Cohn, who is a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a regular speaker at the annual meetings of the Society of Hospital Medicine, American College of Physicians and the Perioperative Summit, and has given over 300 highly rated CME lectures. He developed a comprehensive multimodal curriculum for house staff education in this area, trained over 1,000 residents in perioperative and consultative medicine and has always received the highest scores from resident evaluations.

Cohn is the author/editor of two books on perioperative medicine, the chapter on Preoperative Medical Consultation in Cecil’s/Goldman’s “Textbook of Medicine” and a number of topics in “UpToDate.” Most recently, he published an invited review article, “Preoperative Medical Consultation for the Annals of Internal Medicine,” for the “In the Clinics” series.
