Leading Pathologists Awarded at Florida Society of Pathologists’ Annual Conference

Two leading pathologists from the University of Miami Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine received awards at the Florida Society of Pathologists (FSP)’s annual conference, held in Orlando in February.

Oleksandr Kryvenko, M.D., professor and director of Genitourinary Pathology and co-director of the Pathology Consultation Service, was nominated for the President’s Award and the Appreciation Award by current FSP President Qihui (Jim) Zhai, M.D., who serves as a professor of pathology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, Minn., and laboratory director at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

“It was such a pleasant surprise to receive this nomination,” Dr. Kryvenko said. “The FSP is a key organization for pathologists around the state providing education and improving practice guidelines. I am proud to be a contributing member.”

The FSP recognized Carmen Gomez-Fernandez, M.D., professor, director of Head and Neck Pathology, and vice chair of education, with the Appreciation Award for her work as education co-chair. Dr. Gomez is currently serving as president-elect of the FSP. “It is an honor to promote the education of pathology to our colleagues and trainees,” she said.

Merce Jorda, M.D., Ph.D. M.B.A., professor and J.R. Coulter, Jr. Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, said, “We are all very proud that our faculty’s efforts have been recognized by the FSP leadership. The foundation of this organization is pathologists helping pathologists and leaders in this field sharing their experiences. The department is grateful to make continuing contributions to this important organization.”
