Online M.P.H. Program Director Awarded Medal of Merit for Contributions to Public Health Education
Elahe Nezami, Ph.D., is dedicated to advancing progressive educational programs that expand the public’s awareness of crucial public health and global health issues.
The Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) recently recognized and honored the work of Elahe Nezami, Ph.D., professor of professional practice in the Department of Public Health Sciences and director of the Online Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Nezami currently serves as the North American regional director and vice president of the APACPH and as a member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health.
At the APACPH’s 55th annual conference, Dr. Nezami accepted the consortium’s Medal of Merit for her contributions to public health and her dedication and efforts to advance the field. This award recognizes individuals who have performed outstanding service consistent with the APACPH’s mission to enhance professional education in public health.
Dr. Nezami also presented at the conference as part of two panel discussions, speaking on “Public Health’s Shifting Paradigm for Future Society and Community,” hosted by the Korean Association of Schools of Public Health.

Dr. Nezami is dedicated to advancing progressive educational programs that aim to expand the public’s awareness of crucial public health and global health issues.
As the founding director of the Miller School’s Online M.P.H. program, she dedicates significant time to fostering diversity and inclusion initiatives while spearheading the development of novel academic programs through innovative pedagogy. Possessing a profound commitment to enhancing education and training in public health and global health, Dr. Nezami has established strategic partnerships for in-depth study and research with collaborators across the globe.
Prior to joining the Miller School, Dr. Nezami was director of the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Studies undergraduate program for 25 years at the University of Southern California. In 2008, she developed and launched USC’s M.S. in Global Medicine program and in 2010 launched the university’s Global Health undergraduate and Master of Electrical Engineering: Wireless Health Technology programs. She has also served numerous times as a faculty member at the Harvard Macy Institute’s Program for Educators in Health Professions.
An Educational Environment for All Learners
Dr. Nezami’s ongoing research in global health education is fostering an environment where all learners can thrive. Her key areas of focus include:
• The effective use of technology in pedagogy
• Exploring spaced learning’s role in enhancing outcomes
• Investigating determinants of behavioral risk factors linked to chronic diseases, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
By prioritizing inclusive strategies and evidence-based methods, her research aims to create accessible, impactful learning experiences that are responsive to a diverse global audience.
For her work in education and public health, Dr. Nezami has previously received the Riegelman Award, Remarkable Woman Award, Outstanding Faculty award, Mortar Board, Professor of the Year and USC Teaching Has No Boundaries awards.
