UHealth Emergency Management to Host Full-Scale Emergency Response Exercise at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

The University of Miami Health System Emergency Management will lead a full-scale emergency response training exercise in collaboration with City of Miami Police and Fire Departments, Miami-Dade Police Department, and other University departments on Sunday, July 29. The exercise will run from approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The purpose of this exercise is to develop best practices and test specific response capabilities within a unique health care setting.

Anyone in the area of the Miller School/UHealth campus on Sunday, July 29, should expect to see uniformed police and fire personnel and role players acting as victims. Blank rounds may also be fired as part of the exercise. Road closures will be in effect on N.W. 14th Street between N.W. 12th and 11th Avenues for the duration of the exercise, and there will be signage clearly indicating an exercise is in progress.

Details:
• While perimeter areas surrounding Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center may be closed, patient treatment and access to Sylvester will not be affected during this exercise.
• Traffic on streets surrounding the training area may also be impacted at the time.

• City of Miami Police Department vehicles and units
• City of Miami Fire Department and Fire Rescue vehicles
• Miami-Dade Transit personnel
• Ambulances
• Uniformed police officers
• Uniformed fire personnel
• Role players acting like victims running from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
• Role players with special effects makeup to appear injured, acting as victims of a shooting extricated from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
• Area surrounding Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center taped off with yellow police caution tape

What you might hear:
• Blank rounds that sound like gunfire
• Role players acting out the role of victims
• Police and fire personnel vocalizing commands
