UM and Collaborators in NIH ‘All of Us’ Research Program Awarded $4.45 Million
The University of Miami and other collaborators have been given a $4.45 million funding award and selected to join the highly visible NIH All of Us Research Program as part of the Southeast Enrollment Center (SEEC) network. The All of Us Research Program is a growing precision medicine research effort with more than 25 institutional collaborators across the United States. The SEEC will be composed of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Emory University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the University of Florida.
Leading the University of Miami’s efforts will be Stephan Züchner, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics and Co-Director of the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, Margaret A. Pericak-Vance, Ph.D., Director of the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, and Olveen Carrasquillo, M.D., MPH, Chief of the Division of Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
This selection and award serves to extend the geographic coverage of the All of Us program and strengthen its reach within underserved communities, including lower-income, Hispanic and Latino, African American, American Indian, and rural communities. The program has ambitions to gather data from more than 1 million participants within the United States to accelerate research that may enable more individualized treatments and prevention strategies in the future.
The University of Miami will enroll participants complete with medical baseline data and blood samples from South Florida’s diverse community, including Hispanic, Latino, African American, and Jewish populations, working with the University of Miami Health System, Jackson Health System and the Miami VA Healthcare System, along with the OneFlorida Clinical Research Consortium led by the University of Florida in Gainesville.
The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics houses key assets for this project, including an ascertainment enrollment core and biorepository. Selection for this program complements the University of Miami’s exemplary record of engagement in large-scale long-term follow-up studies, infrastructure building, engagement of minorities, and collaborative efforts.
