Dr. Montgomery, professor and vice chair of faculty development and mentoring, was honored with the Harvey Goldman Lifetime Achievement Award by the Rodger C. Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society. She earned Maude Abbott honors at the 2023 USCAP meeting and is recognized as an expert in gastrointestinal pathology and soft tissue pathology.

“While being recognized is always heartening,” Dr. Montgomery said, “this award is very personal, as it comes from my colleagues and peers in this specialized field.”

Harvey Goldman, M.D., served as professor of pathology at Harvard University and later chair of pathology at the New England Deaconess Hospital and the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. The internationally recognized pathologist was a longtime member of USCAP and known for his passion for education.

In a memorial in The Harvard Gazette, Dr. Goldman was remembered as a “quadruple threat” — a venerated educator and mentor, pioneer in gastrointestinal pathology, researcher and administrator. He was also a founding member of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society.

The awards have been given annually for the last 15 years to honor excellence in education and gastrointestinal pathology.

Miller School residents and fellows presented more than 25 poster and platform sessions at the meeting.

“This is quite an exceptional year for our trainees to be recognized for their work by USCAP,” said Carmen Gomez-Fernandez, M.D., professor in the Division of Anatomic Pathology and vice chair of education and trainee mentoring for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Miller School. “It is reflective of their hard work and the mentoring efforts of our faculty.”

Dr. Gomez and Jaylou Velez Torres, M.D., clinical assistant professor in the Division of Anatomic Pathology, presented a short course on salivary gland pathology. Julio Poveda, M.D., also clinical assistant professor in the Division of Anatomic Pathology, and Jennifer Chapman, M.D., professor and chief of the Division of Hematopathology, provided two interactive microscopy classes.

“Our clinical and educational program has been repeatedly recognized by our peers in pathology at the national and international levels,” said Merce Jorda, M.D., Ph.D., professor and Joseph R. Coulter, Jr. Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. “It is an honor that reflects a lot of hard work by our amazing team as well as the inspirational support by our colleagues at the Miller School of Medicine.”

USCAP is the largest gathering of pathologists in the world, featuring lectures by leading pathologists, interactive microscopy courses and a key opportunity for pathology trainees to present their research and clinical cases.
