Pathology Department Leaders Present at the Association of Pathology Chairs Meeting

Led by Merce Jorda, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the department was well represented at the recent Association of Pathology Chairs (APC) 2023 Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Merce Jorda, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., presented a lecture focused on the recruitment and retention of the academic laboratory workforce.

The APC is a nonprofit society that includes chairs, vice chairs, residency program directors, medical education directors  and departmental administrators. Its goal is to help academic pathology departments in the United States and Canada succeed in their mission of medical education, research, and managing and leading the practice of pathology.

On opening day, Dr. Jorda presented a lecture entitled, “Potential Benefits and Challenges of Integration and the Implications for Education, Research, and Clinical Practice” in the session focused on recruitment and retention of the academic laboratory workforce.

“Pathology has many excellent conferences, but the APC conference is premier on brainstorming innovative ideas to enhance the resilience of our department,” Dr. Jorda said. “We are all facing similar challenges, and having ready access to this collective group of leaders is golden.”

David Lombard, M.D., Ph.D., participated in a panel presentation on “Enabling and Incentivizing Research in Departments of Pathology.”

This marked the first year that David Lombard, M.D., Ph.D., professor and vice chair of clinical and translational research, attended the APC meeting. He related the “Miami experience” in a panel presentation on “Enabling and Incentivizing Research in Departments of Pathology.”

“This was an exciting new meeting for me. I was struck by how many commonalities exist in the challenges facing quite different departments in fostering effective research efforts,” Dr. Lombard said. “Although I believe we are well positioned to expand our research programs, having access to this novel meeting and interaction with colleagues from around North America will only help to facilitate reaching our goals in helping patients both in Florida and worldwide.”

In a final reflections session for residency and fellowship program coordinators, Arisleyda Infante, director of education, rounded out the department’s contributions with her presentation on a panel topic entitled, “Budgeting for Your Program.”
